چکیده

This paper studies the cross-sectional risk-return trade-off in the stock market. A fundamental principle in finance is the positive relation between risk and expected return, whereas recent empirical evidence suggests the opposite. We apply referencedependent preferences to shed light on this violation. Reference-dependent preferences (e.g., prospect theory) typically posit that when facing prior losses, individuals tend to be risk seeking rather than risk averse. Consequently, among stocks where average investors face prior losses, there could be a negative risk-return relation. By contrast, among stocks where average investors face capital gains and are risk averse, the traditional positive relation should emerge. Using several intuitive risk measures, we provide consistent support for our hypotheses. JEL Classification: G02, G12, G14

Developing a Bi-level Objective Model of Risk-Cost Trade-off for Solving Locating-Routing Problem in Transportation of Hazardous Material

Allocating and routing problems in the field of transportation engineering are generally solved using the objective function of minimizing transport cost. Transport risk is a main concern in hazardous material transportation, mainly dependent on the vision of decision makers (national and/or local authorities). In this research work, a trade-off approach has been proposed to determine the safes...

Is There a Risk-Return Trade-Off across Occupations? Evidence from Spain We use data from Spain to test for an effect of earnings risk and skewness on individual wages. We carry out separate estimation for men, women, public and private sector employees. In accordance with previous evidence for the US we show the existence of a riskreturn trade-off across occupations in the Spanish labour marke...

A Multi-Mode Resource-Constrained Optimization of Time-Cost Trade-off Problems in Project Scheduling Using a Genetic Algorithm

In this paper, we present a genetic algorithm (GA) for optimization of a multi-mode resource constrained time cost trade off (MRCTCT) problem. The proposed GA, each activity has several operational modes and each mode identifies a possible executive time and cost of the activity. Beyond earlier studies on time-cost trade-off problem, in MRCTCT problem, resource requirements of each execution mo...

An empirical analysis of the downside risk-return trade-off at daily frequency

We test empirically this hypothesis using intraday data along with the recent measure of downside-risk called realized semivariance developed in Barndorff-Nielsen et al. (2010). ...

Is There a Risk-return Trade-off in Educational Choices? Evidence from Spain

We use data from Spain to test for an e ect of earnings variance and skewness on individual wages. We carry out separate estimations for men and women. In accordance with the scant previous evidence mainly focused on the US, we report the existence of a risk-return trade-o across educational choices in the Spanish labor market. These results are in conformity with preferences of risk-averse ind...
